At twenty-two years of age, Arthur Seaton is a hard-drinking lathe operator in a bicycle factory. Just a slice of life in a s council tenement street full of working class people. By having affairs nighy married women his is also battling against the perceived norms of courtship and hence ultimately marriage until he is beaten up by the soldier husband of one of his conquests.

This was a cracker. Its easy come easy go for Arthur and I remember feeling like that.

This scare fails to dampen Arthur’s hedonistic outlook though, as he continually evades detection from the foreman at the factory and from various husbands out to revenge his affairs. But still, this is the real deal. I en First published in my edition is the 50th anniversary one.

The Angry Young Man. A small redeeming niht about the characters. The characters are never simple. Challenged to a drinking contest, Arthur defeats “Loudmouth” before falling down the stairs drunk.
Arthur is portrayed in a more reflective and resigned mood, less invincible to the trappings of social norms.
