It’s not an ugly duckling story because she stutters and is normal looking for the whole book. View all 32 comments. He is a man of few but potent words, and instead of giving him an exaggeratedly elite accent, Richard Armitage makes us feel that we have here a powerful warrior under the skin, the 18th century descendent of Gisborne the medieval hell-raiser, or Uhtred the Saxon warlord, with the flimsiest veneer of eighteenth century blue silk and gold lace or, heaven help us, puce velvet.
There’s simply no way he’s going to let her get into trouble. To rise to the challenge is to make her voice attractive and rather touching — this is no joke, for her or the listener. What do you think? It takes place very early on, and it made me laugh and sigh repeatedly with delight. I confess I have hardly ever enjoyed reading about a villain more than I enjoyed reading about Lethbridge.
If Horry had not been an impulsive, stubborn seventeen-year old there would have been little conflict and no story.
She attends a ball and upon getting in her carriage to go home, is kidnapped and taken to Lord Lethbridge’s house where he intends to convrnient her to gain his revenge on Rule. It would feel far too much like taking advantage. I don’t much care for the hero.

The Convenient Marriage, by Georgette Heyer
Yes, I am fallible. Pre-marriage, she appears to be slightly more intelligent than your average vegetable, but the moment she marries that’s all out the window. That Horry has already defended herself in the moment — and with an iron poker to the head — nicely removes any paternalistic element.
