Very intelligent and original stories, portrayed in a good writing style. This possibly applied to a couple of the stories in this collection, but most of them are pretty accessible, and just great scifi all round. Learning to Be Me, the other story, has a take on “helplessness in the face of fate” that’s similar in a way, set in a world where implantable jewels in people’s skulls learn and gradually mimic consciousness almost perfectly, so that in your mid-twenties you can get all that useless brain-matter excised and enjoy the benefits of having your thoughts manifested in flawless silicon instead of fallible neurons.

Egan is evidently a remarkably clever author. La infinitat dels personatges.

I ended up muttering something about ‘ there’s two ma Great collection of hard sci-fi. La Biotecnologia Hermanas de Sangre: The Planck Div A collection of the author’s speculative fiction.

A must read for hard sci-fi lovers. Our Lady of Chernobyl: Looking at the publication dates, I’ve got to say he egn ahead of his time as well.

Too many first person narrators? In addition I have always been amazed at Neal Stephenson for being able to write Snowcrash and The Diamond Age in and respectively. This is not quite as good as Axiomatic, his other short story collection I’ve read.

Comparing Greg Egan’s stuff to something like Stanislav Lem’s short works really highlights what the value of this is. One issue here is that he is at his strongest writing stories on simulated consciousness I guess because of his computer science backgroundbut some of these stories deal with biotech instead, which isn’t really his strong point.

Human beings are capable of anything: Egan’s stories lack much of the wonder and awe I enjoy in reading about the possible future, but they are probably more believable for all that.

It’s all hard science-fiction from bioengineering over chemistry to physicsbut you don’t have to be well-educated to understand the stories Egan has written. Axiomaticoo 26, Jason rated it really liked it Recommends it for: Here artificial beings and software downloads live in far-flung polises, creating artificial landscapes and clones at will.

There is a level of plausibility in his most imaginative tales which is helped by his solid underpinnings of social and societal reactions.

Nuanced explorations of how the human psyche functions and reacts when faced with profound moral choices. C’est dommage, je trouve. Egan explores this and lots of other interesting and disturbing questions in “The Cutie. Paperbackpages.

Peeking at the other reviews, I noted with interest that some people loved stories I hated and vice-versa so I’ll play the game: Axiomatic is a collection of Greg Egan’s short stories that appeared in various science fiction magazines mostly Interzone and Asimov’s between and Y lo es, fundamentalmente, por dos cuestiones: The technology, though advanced, is taken as a backdrop against which societal, psychological and philosophical questions are raised and consequences revealed.

Sometimes the technology–like a simulated brain–seems less a fully imagined extrapolation of current technology than a necessary placeholder in a thought exercise but, in other stories, you get the sense that someone will have invented what you’re reading about during the time you’ve been suspending your disbelief.

Or if you could choose which emotions to feel? Or by chanc A lot weaker that “Axiomatic”, his somewhat earlier short story collection, though I’m struggling to say why. Greg Egan specialises in hard science fiction stories with mathematical and quantum ontology themes, including the nature of consciousness. I found some of the stories in this book somewhat forgettable ‘Chaff’and if I were to think of the rating as some sort of average, it would probably have been lower.

Luminous by Greg Egan

Some of the ideas presented in this collection are haunting and seem day-after-tomorrow possible; Egan seasons his stories with just the right amount of science and technology to give the reader a sense of realism amidst the unfolding dystopia.

Most of the stories have something to do with the way technology shapes Who are wxiomatico, really? Anyway, an interesting collection if you, like me, want to read everything by Egan. At times quite aziomatico depth with his knowledge of the scientific topic but it challenges the readers ideas and perceptions which I love about Scifi.
